GTA V’s superb online gameplay is the secret to its longevity sales-wise.

The ultra-violent Grand Theft Auto V has remained to be developer Rock Star Games’ top cash cow since its debut in 2013 and the title continues to ring cash registers all around the world especially last year.

Fact is GTA V tops the list of the best-selling titles in the last 10 years across all platforms and outlets tracked since 2010, but it is certainly being threatened by the Call of Duty series with the latter’s many mutations.

GTA V is without doubt the most popular sequel in the GTA franchise due to its convoluted storyline, gameplay features, and its widely popular online multiplayer mode, GTA Online.

Just like in the previous GTA games, players assume the role of a criminals as they venture into the fictional city of Los Santos, which is parody of Los Angeles, California.

Like in GTA 1 to 4, players can do whatever they want such as steal cars, buy clothes, buy houses, and even kill NPC — that’s non-playable character for non-gamers — like pedestrians.

What made the fifth instalment unique is that players can control three protagonists instead of one in Story Mode.

The controllable characters are Michael De Santa, a former bank robber living the lavish life of a millionaire with a troubled family life; Trevor Philips, Michael’s former best friend and a drug dealer with psychotic tendencies; and Franklin Clinton, a street hoodlum who dreams big and wants to get away from the ghetto life.

Each character has its own arc in the game’s plot and as the player progresses through the storyline the characters will eventually meet and work together as a team.

Call of Duty is the modern Counterstrike with its many scenarios and timeframes that appeal to diverse gaming audiences.

They also have special skills such as Trevor’s berserker mode which makes him invulnerable in a short time. Michael has bullet time which allows him to shoot his targets accurately like Max Payne. As for Franklin, he has precision driving that allows him to drift smoothly and effortlessly behind the wheels.

But what makes GTA V popular to gamers is the GTA Online mode as there they can create their own characters, customizing how they look — from gender, skin tone, clothing, hairstyles, etc.
They can play with their friends and do missions such as heist, gang wars and even street races, or go crazy in a free roam.

The challenge in GTA Online is how well you and your friends can play as a team, especially in heist missions. Each person is assigned a role whether as a driver, shooter or demolitionist. If one person dies or gets caught, they fail in the mission.

Once they successfully complete the heist, they get a share of the GTA cash and are rewarded XP (experience points) which will increase their stats such as health, stamina, shooting and driving. The more missions you complete the more cash and items you will get.

PC users also enjoy GTA Online as they can freely use mods to create whatever they want, such as adding race tracks from the sky, characters such as Iron Man, Batman and Godzilla. They can even add music not included in the game’s official soundtrack.

While GTA V is already seven years old, its online gameplay, which is constantly updated, ensures that there are always new buyers of the title.

Here’ the complete list from 1 to 20: Grand Theft Auto V, Call of Duty (CoD): Black Ops, CoD: Black Ops II, CoD Modern Warfare 3, CoD Black Ops 3, CoD Ghosts, Red Dead Redemption, CoD: WW3, CoD Black Ops 4, Minecraft, CoD Advanced Warfare, CoD: Modern Warfare 2019, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Mario Kart 8, CoD: Infinite Warfare, Battlefield 1 and 4, Destiny, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Star Wars Battlefront 2015.

What do you know? Mario is still relevant with a niche market enough to prop it within the top 20 best-selling games of the decade.

Originally published by Infinity Ward, Call of Duty’s spinoffs, created by varying developers, occupy 10 spots in the 15 top selling games and many more variants are expected to come out with varying degree of successes.

And as FPS games go, Counterstrike would have been among the top sellers had it been constantly updated as titles on sale. Our editor has played CS’s mother game Half Life in the middle 1990s and imagine had CS really been given the programming attention it deserves.

Red Dead Redemption 2 may be more violent and it is essentially the GTA of the Old West. Like GTA, players assume an outlaw protagonist: Arthur Morgan, a veteran member of the Van der Linge gang.

As Arthur, the player must help the gang in its struggles in different towns by any means necessary, which includes hunting animals for food or trade, fishing, treasuring hunting to pulling out heists and robbing people.

Similar to GTA, it also has its own online multiplayer mode called Red Dead Online, where gamers play with their friends and do activities like bounty hunting or heist missions.

However, both games have their differences. In Red Dead Redemption 2, the violence is more graphic as the player can blow the head of someone using a rifle at pointblank with the blood splattering around. When it comes to animals, players can take its fur by cutting or skinning it with a knife. You can feed people to animals, burn them alive and even decapitate them.
