Summit on UHC commences

More than 350 representatives from the government, private sector and the academe will gather for the annual Health Leadership Summit on Universal Health Care (UHC) on 21 November at the Bonifacio Hall of Shangri-La at The Fort, Taguig City.

The Health Leadership Summit, organized by Ayala Healthcare Holdings Inc. in partnership with the Ateneo Professional Schools, is envisioned to be a series of annual conferences covering critical topics on the health system of the Philippines.

AC Health president and CEO Paolo Borromeo said that this year’s conference will focus on the implementation of the UHC Law in line with the recent signing of its Implementing Rules and Regulations.

“We hope this will serve as a venue to facilitate discussions and encourage collaboration among different stakeholders in healthcare. We at AC Health are huge supporters of Universal Healthcare and have been eager to partner with the government, academe and other groups to improve access to health,” Borromeo said.

John Paul Vergara, vice president for the Ateneo Professional Schools, said that apart from UHC policy makers, they also expect the UHC Integration Sites to be represented at the summit.

“This is a unique opportunity for participants not only to learn from, but also to engage with our speakers and panelists. The success of UHC will depend on our collective efforts towards its implementation and we hope this summit will pave the way for such partnerships,” Vergara added.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III will deliver the opening remarks and present an overview of UHC implementation and its current status. Congresswoman Helen Tan of Quezon, the House Chairman for the Committee on Health and Demography, will deliver the keynote speech, highlighting the big shifts introduced by the UHC Law and the rationale behind them.

The whole-day conference will then delve into three big shifts introduced by the UHC Law, specifically on health care provider networks, primary health care providers and preventive health promotion. Each topic will be discussed by a panel of experts from the government, private sector, NGO and the academe.
