TEHRAN (AFP) — Iran’s social media star known as Sahar Tabar is famous for drastically altering her appearance through cosmetic surgery to look like her idol, American actress Angelina Jolie.
Tabar shot to prominence on Instagram last year after posting a series of images of her face altered through plastic surgery, which is hugely popular in the Islamic republic with tens of thousands of operations taking place each year.
Instagram is the only major social media service accessible in Iran as Facebook and Twitter and the Telegram messenger service are officially banned.
Most of the photos and videos Tabar shared with her 26,800 Instagram followers have also been heavily edited so that she seemingly resembles the Hollywood star.
Tabar’s fame suddenly turned into shame though as she was arrested and detained on the orders of Tehran’s guidance court, which deals with “cultural crimes and social and moral corruption,” Tasnim news agency reported late Saturday.
Tabar’s IG account features images of her like Jolie with a gaunt face, pouting lips and sharply turned-up nose. But her altered look wouldn’t be reflecting beauty but worry as she has been charged with blasphemy, inciting violence, gaining income through inappropriate means and encouraging youths to corruption, the news agency said.
