Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong was chief of the Philippine National Police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group when he conducted illegal drug raids inside the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa.

Aside from addressing the problems in the Bureau of Corrections in terms of structural organization, the BuCor should enhance its digital capability in monitoring activities inside the scandal-rocked New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa.

Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, who led several NBP raids while he was still a police general, said even a simple but working closed-circuit television (CCTV) monitoring system installed in prisons would be of big help.

“Gadgets can be like ordinary CCTVs found in business establishments and residences but should be equipped with analytical and monitoring systems,” said Magalong, who will testify before the Senate on Thursday regarding the controversies surrounding the BuCor.

Magalong said the efforts of the senators and other officials in finding solutions to the problems tainting BuCor are welcome but he said there should also be digital enhancements.

“The CCTVs must have the capacity to digitally store the facial details of every inmate particularly those who committed heinous crimes,” said Magalong.

The gadgets should also be able to record all details about inmates for authorities to have stronger reference data in the future.
