PUERTO PRINCESA — Puerto Princesa is ready to roll out the red carpet for the country’s brightest young talents when it hosts the 2019 Batang Pinoy from 15 to 21 August.
City council Nesario Awat said the local government had allotted P20 million for the hosting of the prestigious annual competition that aims to discover fresh talents for the Philippine national team.
The event would be held at the sprawling Ramon V. Mitra Sports Complex, where 31 sports including centerpiece athletics and swimming as well as badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, chess, karatedo, lawn tennis, taekwondo and table tennis will be disputed.
“We have already prepared the venue and all the facilities needed for the Batang Pinoy,” Awat said.
“In fact, we have enough area at the Mitra Sports Complex and the Balayong Park which can be utilized by the national secretariat.”
A total of 10,000 visitors are expected comprised of 6,000 athletes and 4,000 coaches, team officials, parents, working staff, media and guests.
City sports director Gregorio Austria said they are expecting an influx of visitors since the event, which is the pet project of the Philippine Sports Commission, is already the national finals.
“We have to prepare for their daily consumption of food since they will be here before 15 August,” Austria said.
