Davao City 1st District Rep. Paolo “Pulong” Duterte accepted Friday the post of deputy speaker for political affairs offered by Taguig Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano indicating the former’s support for the latter’s speakership bid.
Cayetano, the presumptive Speaker, made the revelation in a radio interview and posted on his Facebook page a photo of him and the son of President Duterte shaking hands during their meeting at the Fort in Taguig City to confirm their cooperation.
The photo has the following caption:
Thank you very much Cong. Paolo “Pulong” Duterte for our talk on what the country needs and how we can put together a very responsive Congress. Thank you also for accepting the challenge for being the next Deputy Speaker for Political Affairs. Together we can all work towards a better Philippines and Implement the President’s Agenda.
Cayetano said he asked Duterte to help him by accepting the deputy speaker post. The Taguig congressman described the development as crucial.
Cayetano said the latter agreed to meet with him and their discussion was good.
“His (Duterte) only advice is no corruption, as the President said. Secondly, how to unite Congress. The House will only be stable if we are united,” Cayetano said in Filipino.
“I like what he (Duterte) said: protect the Filipinos and really no corruption,” he added.
Last week, Duterte hinted that Cayetano is not yet assured of becoming Speaker in a term-sharing with Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco as President Duterte proposed.
After his father announced his choice of Cayetano and Velasco as Speakers, the Davao City congressman said the Speakership fight is not yet over as supporters of other aspiring Speaker may stage a “coup” when the House officially elects its leader on Monday, the start of session of the 18th Congress.
