Beauty without diets

Contrary to what many people believe, weight loss doesn’t equal a healthy body. Similarly, being thin nowadays is not always deemed as sexy.

As people love to say these days, what’s beautiful is inside, and sexy is when you feel most comfortable about your body, no matter what shape or size.

Of course, individuals have different body types and how one achieves that “most comfortable” level — one in which we feel good about ourselves — also varies.

At a recent sit-down with all the winners of Binibining Pilipinas 2029 at the Daily Tribune office, we discovered that these fine specimens of womanhood do not believe in diets — that is, to lose weight by following certain eating rules.

While others meticulously track whatever food they eat, it is safe to say that eating well is enough because it increases your mental strength and boosts your energy so you can fight illnesses when needed.

Though it can sometimes feel like too much to think about, simply put that eating well involves not only fruits and vegetables, but also one’s “comfort food” — because healthy eating doesn’t have to be a sacrifice all the time. When your body feels good, you feel happier inside and out, too.

What works for you may not work for others because our bodies respond differently to food. This is why it’s important to find a diet that works best for you. For example, rather than trying to cut out fats, focus on enjoying healthy types such as the omega 3s that at the same time can help protect your body from heart diseases.

In an interview with SELF, Patricia Bannan, M.S., R.D.N. and author of Eat Right When The Time Is Right, said, “Resolving to never eat a sweet again takes a lot of effort and can create a feeling of deprivation. A more realistic resolution would be to create an environment in which you can consume fewer sweets without having to rely solely on your willpower.”

You might be thinking: how can eating pizza or burgers help my diet? The answer is in the sense of wellbeing. You are less likely to end up completely depriving yourself of eating such guilty foods, and then overeating as a result, because there is balance. Bottomline is, you can eat cakes or fried food but don’t forget to include foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals, too.

According to a study published in Lancet, “low intake of healthy foods is the most important factor, rather than the high intake of unhealthy (junk) foods.”

In simple terms, 20 percent of people around the world who die every year is not because they ate too much unhealthy food, but because they didn’t consume enough nutrients coming from fruits, whole grains, nuts or seeds.

The first step is to get to know your body, then combine it with exercise to make your body much stronger.

A lot of us girls focus more on fitness rather than dieting, because dieting is a different thing. Everyone has to have their own thing. Everything depends on your own body. Everyone is different so I wouldn’t recommend following this diet, or that diet because everyone’s body is different. You know, do not deprive yourself because your body does need food to be fueled to work.

I thought that not eating was a good diet and made you sexy, but right now fit is sexy, not thin is sexy. Because you really have to balance it out, workout. It’s not all about food, it’s all about workout.

I want to let girls know that everyone’s body and diet are different. If I eat less, I gain more weight, so if I eat more cake and everything, my body starts to trim down a little bit because it needs its sugar and nutrients. Just get to know your body.

This is really my body. I am not doing any diet at all. I eat fries. I eat everything that I want. But for me, I think as long as you eat the right amount (then it’s good). I was once a gymnast, that’s why I have a fast metabolism. I used to dance also. I agree with Sam that you have to know your body type, because if I don’t eat rice and a balanced meal with meat and vegetables or protein then I will be so thin. But we need to workout. I really think it’s different for everyone. You have to be strong at the same time. Feel confident about yourself.

So I feel a little bad saying this after the burger, but I love chocolates and every kind of sweets. I cannot say no to dessert. So it was a little bit tough during the pageant to deprive myself of sugar because that is the number one thing that will make you bloat. I mean you can eat and eat and eat, but eat well, your veggies or protein. But I had to cut down on my sweets, too.
