PDP officially backs Velasco bid as Speaker

Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco was officially endorsed as the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) candidate as House Speaker, Sen. Manny Pacquiao announced Wednesday via livestream.

“I am therefore announcing the endorsement and support of PDP-Laban for Congressman Lord Allan Velasco as Speaker of the House of Representatives in the full term of the 18th Congress,” said Pacquiao, who is currently training in Los Angeles for his July 20 fight against Keith Thurman.

According to Pacquiao, majority of PDP-Laban congressmen and members of Nationalist People’s Coalition signed a multi-party manifesto backing Velasco’s bid.

PDP-Laban has also rejected calls for term sharing as the next Speaker should serve the full term of three years to make sure the administration’s legislative agenda will be fully implemented.

Out to challenge Velasco are Leyte Rep.-elect Martin Romualdez, reelected Davao del Norte 1st District Rep. and former Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez and Taguig Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano.

Pampanga Rep. Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales (Third District), earlier reported as also interested in the Speakership post, decided to support Velasco instead.

“Malinaw sa multi-party manifesto na walang term sharing na mangyayari,” Gonzales said in a television interview. “Alam na ni Pangulong Duterte ang multi-party manifesto of support for Velasco.”
