Poised for a fresh mandate, Davao del Norte Representative Pantaleon Alvarez on Tuesday announced that he is ready to take a shot once more for the Speakership in the House of Representatives.
In a statement, Alvarez said that he intends to seek the top post in the Lower Chamber in the 18th Congress.
“Yes, I will,” Alvarez answered when asked if he will seek the House leadership anew.
The Davao del Norte Representative won his reelection bid with a huge margin over outgoing governor Anthony del Rosario, another Duterte ally, who ran under the Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) coalition of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte.
The stalwart of the ruling party PDP-Laban and close ally of President Rodrigo Duterte leads the vote count as of 5 p.m. of 14 May with 163,977 votes as against Del Rosario’s 68,193 votes.
To recall, Alvarez was elected speaker in the 17th Congress, but was ousted by Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in July 2018.
Meanwhile, Alvarez’s friend-turned-foe, Antonio Floirendo, was unsuccessful in his reelection bid in Davao del Norte’s second legislative district as he trailed PDP-Laban’s Aldu Dujali (125,170 as against 92,679), while at third spot was Rico Peligro with 2,279 votes.
For the governor post, Edwin Jubahib, Alvarez’s chief of staff, gathered 275,984 votes as against the 166,870 votes of former governor Rodolfo del Rosario Jr.
In the race for vice governor, Rey Uy (PDP-Laban) also lead Raymond Joey Millan (HNP), 268,264 votes as against 140,151.
