Globe to roll out 5G in June



Telecommunications provider Globe announced plans to deploy fifth generation (5G) technology in the country by June, following successful trial runs of the technology outside Metro Manila, its chief commercial officer Alberto de Larrazabal said.

“We are starting the experiments. We should have the commercial launch starting June. The speed by which we are going to be expanding that is something that we still need to confirm based on the results of trials as well as the used cases,” Larrazabal said.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of Globe’s financial results for the first quarter of 2019, the executive said the 5G technology would be initially available to its Home subscribers and will not yet include mobile devices.

Globe projects that the 5G technology will have speeds as fast as 1 gigabit per second based on its earlier tests.

The wireless service provider earlier said that it targets to roll out the 5G technology within the second quarter of this year.

The technology will enable its subscribers to experience mobile services at higher speeds while enterprises will be able to improve their operations.

Globe has partnered with Huawei Technologies for the planning and design of a mobile broadband network as well as the establishment of a mobile innovation center for research and development of the 5G technology.

Meanwhile, Globe Telecom again notched global recognition for its various efforts to strengthen its marketing and products and service offerings after the company’s business units, Globe Business and GoWiFi, won two major awards at the prestigious annual Stevie Awards 2019.

The telco giant received a Gold Stevie for “Project Eagle: The Globe Business Thematic Campaign” under the “Award for Innovation in Cross-Media Marketing” category; and a Bronze Stevie for “GoWiFi: A New Way to Engage Customers” in the “Award for Innovation in Consumer Products and Services” category.

The Globe Business project harps on sparking a revolution in company culture with a theme and strategy that evolved around #CultureShock, comprised of the annual Leadership Innovation (Lead-In) Forum, Digital Marketing & Social Media executions, videos, Public Relations execution, and other content.
