Horse owners and enthusiasts from La Trinidad town and other parts of Benguet over the weekend paraded and raced their horses during the 2019 “Dongba ni Kavadjo” (Race of Horses) festival.

The initiative was their way of paying tribute to their horses for continuing to be their reliable partners in accomplishing various tasks, especially in their farms.

The activity was also aimed at expressing the owners’ gratitude to their horses which used to be the main mode of transportation of the local residents, before the advent of cars and other forms of modern transportation.

Also, Dongba ni Kavadjo is an event to remind the people of the province that these gentle animals were once utilized as the main mode of transportation in the olden times and was part of the daily lives of the Ibaloy and Kankanaey tribes who were the first settlers of Benguet.

Mayor Romeo Salda said horses were used by folks a long time ago to trade goods with other tribes and people in the lowlands.
