Reds intensify campus recruitment

The Philippine Army (PA) on Saturday bared that New People’s Army (NPA) rebels have intensified their recruitment activities in order to lure students and even teachers into joining their movement.

This, as the PA 7th Infantry Division which is based in Nueva Ecija warned that NPA tacticians are actively operating in various schools and universities in the province to recruit students into their fold.

Brig. Gen. Lenard Agustin, commander of 7th ID, revealed that Kathleen Ramos, a student of Central Luzon State University Muñoz campus, was recruited by the League of Filipino Students and later by the NPA.

Ramos was a veterinary medicine student in the said university when she was recruited by the student organization in 2002.

After several years, Ramos was killed not during the pursuit operations of the military forces but by her NPA comrades who suspected her of being a snitch.

Her remains were exhumed by the government soldiers through the information provided by a former rebel after being missing for three years.

“All students and even teachers are vulnerable targets for NPA recruitment. I would like to tell everyone that if we want to see change in the government, we should change ourselves first,” said Agustin during a recent dialogue with local stakeholders.
