LTO hosts Road Safety Congress

The Department of Transportation—Land Transportation Office (DoTr-LTO), in partnership with various government agencies, the private sector and various road safety advocacy groups held the first Road Safety Congress on 27 to 28 February 2019 in Zamboanga City.

The two-day event is part of the LTO Region IX’s Road Safety Program dubbed as Partnership for Enhanced Road Safety (PERS). With the theme “Making our roads safer through convergence,” the program promotes a unified, holistic and proactive approach to address road safety issues in the region.

“We are very excited to have this activity. Few people realize that road accident is a major cause of many injuries and deaths,” LTO chief Assistant Secretary Edgar Galvante said.

Earlier, Galvante had directed all LTO Regional Offices to institute road safety programs to address the spate of road accidents nationwide.

DoTr Undersecretary for Legal Affairs Atty. Reinier Paul Yebra, who represented DoTr Secretary Arthur Tugade, stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility.

“That’s the top priority of the DoTr — the safety of commuters, passengers and the general public. It is time drivers should realize they should drive safely, not because they want to avoid penalties but because of genuine concern for the safety of pedestrians and commuters alike,” Yebra said.
