Security forces in the country were place on heightened alert Monday following the deadly blasts in a cathedral in Jolo, Sulu.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) declared the alert status effective at 12:01 a.m. to prevent similar attacks in other parts of the country, PNP spokesperson Senior Superintendent Bernard Banac said in a press briefing.
Under the status, all police regional directors nationwide are mandated to intensify their security measures, particularly checkpoint operations. They were also tasked to strictly enforce the election gun ban.
The Islamic State (IS) militant group earlier claimed responsibility for the Sunday bombings at the Mt. Carmel Cathedral that killed 20 people mostly soldiers and wounded at least 81 others.
