Kanlaon calms down

Volcanic activity in Mount Kanlaon has declined prompting the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) to lower its alert level in the area.

In its volcano bulletin issued at 8 a.m. Friday, Phivolcs lowered the alert level of Kanlaon Volcano to 1 (low unrest) from 2 (moderate unrest) as seismic activity has declined, inflation of the edifice slowed down, sulfur dioxide emission waned and steam from the crater has weakened.

Phivolcs said no magmatic eruption is foreseen in the immediate future.

However, the agency warned the public to still avoid entering the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone due to perennial hazards of rockfalls, avalanches, sudden outgassing and steam-driven or phreatic eruption at the summit area.
