A Quezon City policeman was killed by motorcycle-riding assassins Wednesday night along the stretch of V. Luna Street in Barangay Malaya around 8 in the evening.
Investigators identified the slain policeman as PO3 Rufino Gapis who was assigned to the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Headquarter Support Unit in Camp Karingal.
Witnesses said they saw a motorcycle tailing the white SUV of Gapis along the road. When the victim’s vehicle stopped, one of the riders alighted the motorbike, approached Gapis’ vehicle and opened fire at close range.
The assailants immediately sped off after shooting the victim.
QCPD director, Chief Supt. Joselito Esquievel Jr. said responders had difficulty getting the victim out of his vehicle because the doors were locked.
Eventually, rescuers managed to rush Gapis to the nearest hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Investigators recovered from the victim’s vehicle his ID, service firearm, bullets, a handcuff and P300,000 in cash.
Probers are still trying to get leads that could point to the motive behind the killing of the police officer and the identity of the gunmen.
