Age-defying recipes



There is no magic food that can melt the years away, but you can defy age with nourishing, delicious meals. We have heard of foods that help protect the body inside and out, caring for our internal organs and cells, promoting healthier, younger-looking skin and shinier hair.

True, we don’t have a choice when it comes to aging, but we can choose how we will age.

Choosing the right food to eat, exercising and embracing healthy living have positive effects on living and aging.

Get ready to age better. This was Grace Ouano’s message during the recent launching in the Philippines of her latest award-winning cookbook, The Age Beautifully Cookbook: Easy and Exotic Longevity Secrets from Around the World, held at the City Club Ballroom, Alphaland, Makati City.

The cookbook, which has garnered many recognitions including the “Best in the World” by Gourmand International Cookbook Awards, Gold Award by Independent Publishers’ Living Now Book Awards and a finalist in the 2017 International Book Awards in the International Cookbook Category, contains over 100 easy-to-make recipes that promote health and well-being.

The recipes are created based on modern scientific research and ancient knowledge of medicinal herbs and natural ingredients from around the world. Many of the recipes are gluten-free or offer gluten-free alternatives. A number of them are also dairy-free or offer alternatives for those who want or need to limit dairy in their diet.

“I start with classic dishes, many of which I learned how to make from my mother, and I amp up their nutrient value with anti-aging superfoods, some of them quite exotic but easy to obtain. I research new ingredients constantly, always learning about antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables from all over the world. I have a list of my favorite spices and grains. And I work with nutritionists to decide on the best possible proteins and sweeteners to use in my cooking. Now that I’m comfortable with how simple it is to incorporate FoodTrients into our daily meals, every week I try to share what we have discovered and what we continue to learn,” wrote Grace O, as she is fondly called.

The cookbook also includes Grace O’s Feel-Good Formula for Longevity, Beauty and Wellness, as well as lists of top age-fighting fruits, vegetables, grains, spices and proteins. A guide to age-defying FoodTrients and their benefits, a list of ingredient resources and menus for entertaining are also available in the cookbook.

Culinary program

Grace O is also the creator of FoodTrients, a unique culinary program dedicated to great-tasting recipes that also deliver age-defying benefits. A FoodTrient is what she calls the natural anti-aging properties of food. Her recipes incorporate the ingredients needed to help prevent the diseases of aging.

Her expertise is a result of being exposed to cooking and recipes early on in her life. She grew up in her mother’s culinary school in the Philippines and was also influenced by the health advice of her father, who was a physician and had a way of looking at food as though it could heal.

After moving to America and spending over 20 years in healthcare, she saw the connection between healthy food and the diseases related with aging. She is the CEO and owner of four skilled nursing facilities in the US where she witnesses the health challenges of aging. It’s one of the reasons she believes that food, spices and herbs can be some of our best strongest allies for aging better.

“As I learned more about the positive effects healthy food and ingredients have on disease and aging, I was compelled to get back in the kitchen and create a cookbook that fuse international and American flavors, familiar and exotic ingredients, and powerful nutrients that help the body and mind fight diseases and the wear and tear of aging,” wrote Grace O.

Her first cookbook, The Age GRACEfully Cookbook: The Power of Foodtrients® to Promote Health and Well-being for a Joyful and Sustainable Life was also featured at the event.

Since the publication of her first anti-aging cookbook, Grace O has identified eight categories of FoodTrients that are essential to age-defying and healthier living – Anti-inflammatory, Antioxidant, Disease Prevention, Immune Booster, Mind, Beauty, Strength and Weight Loss.

For cookbook readers’ easy reference, specifically-designed logos represent each category and are indicated with every recipe along with summaries of the recipe’s healthful properties.
“These benefits show how specific foods, herbs and spices in the recipes help keep skin looking younger, prevent the diseases of aging and increase energy and vitality. By incorporating these properties in an everyday diet, people are more likely to look and feel younger, have more energy, and improve their mood and mind,” she said in a statement.

“When it comes to great tasting food and good health, I want to encourage everyone to be conscious of the food they eat. I also urge cooks to use good-quality, organic ingredients whenever possible, but understand that budgets and availability can make that challenging,” wrote Grace O.

The book launching/menu tasting was also a charity event for Bright Halls Foundation, a home for abandoned children in Makati City. Proceeds from the cookbook sales will be donated to Bright Halls Foundation.
