He wants to experience competing with Filipinos and it is indeed very different
BAGUIO CITY — The son of a former national cyclist zoomed to his first gold medal in the Batang Pinoy National Championships Tuesday at the Baguio City National High School here.
Marc Van Baluyut, the 15-year old son of former national team member Villamor Baluyut, clinched the gold medal in the 14-15 years old division of the criterium event.
The Rome-based Economics student at Liceo de Italia broke away in the second of the scheduled five laps of the 2.2-kilometer race that snaked through Burnham Park en route to the victory.
The elder Baluyut couldn’t help but be proud of his son.
“He wants to experience competing with Filipinos and it is indeed very different,” said Baluyut, adding that they did multiple adjustments coping with the Filipino style of competition.
Aside from Baluyut, Nicole Marie del Rosario of Cebu City also claimed the gold in the women’s division after completing three laps.
“The training is all worth it,” said the Grade 9 student from University of San Carlos after finishing first place.
Del Rosario stated that silver medalist Moira Erediano and bronze winner Catherine Yu would also be her toughest competitors when she sees action in the triathlon competition of this event organized by the Philippine Sports Commission.
