A strong typhoon was churning towards Japan on Wednesday, prompting the weather agency to warn of heavy rain and strong winds and forcing airlines to cancel scores of flights.

Typhoon “Shanshan,” with an atmospheric pressure of 970 hectopascals at its center, was moving toward the Izu island chain, south of Tokyo.

The typhoon was expected to be less than 150 kilometers from Tokyo around midnight on Wednesday, sparking fears the busy morning commute in the capital could be disrupted the following day, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
