SMC chief launches new BMW M5

“We’ve come a long way from San Andres, pare!”

These were the words uttered by San Miguel Corporation’s (SMC) Ramon S. Ang when we asked him how he felt after launching the latest BMW M5.

San Miguel acquired the distributorship of BMW from the group of Palawan Gov. Pepito Alvarez last year but this is the first time Ang came out in public to introduce the brand.

Ang — RSA to many — is reputed to have been a mere mechanic before his meteoric rise to the top of the Philippine business pyramid when he became the president and CEO of SMC. He is well known for his passion for cars and has an impressive collection to back this up.

In a 15 July launch of the M5, BMW invited members of the country’s supercar club elite. These car enthusiasts arrived with their Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Porsches.

“We now have a car that is faster than a Ferrari or a Lamborghini that we can drive to an ordinary meeting or dinner,” Ang said, referring to the BMW M5 he just launched.

The M5 is a 600 plus horsepower luxury sports car controlled by an All-Wheel Drive system. It is powered by a 4.4 liter V8 engine featuring the BMW M TwinPower Turbo Technology. It pulls at an enormous 750Nm of torque and is controlled by an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.

The new BMW M5 retails locally at P17,750,000 and RSA said he is getting the first one.
