Machete attacker collared

Police arrested a 39-year-old man after he allegedly attacked his 35-year-old neighbor with a butcher knife in Barangay Potrero, Malabon City.

The incident occurred along Doña Juana Road at around 10:15 a.m. while the victim was walking home with her 3-year-old niece, one day before her birthday.

Closed-circuit television footage captured the suspect approaching the victim from behind and repeatedly striking her with a 13-inch knife.

"She did not notice that the suspect was waiting nearby, and he suddenly approached her and hacked her," said Malabon City Police officer-in-charge Col. Kenneth Mission.

The victim suffered deep lacerations to her neck, back, arms, and ears and was rushed to a hospital for emergency surgery. Doctors are monitoring her condition ahead of a scheduled magnetic resonance imaging scan.

Residents in the area subdued and detained the suspect at the scene while he was still holding the weapon, turning him over to responding officers.
