DPWH resumes EDSA Phase 2 reblocking
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) resumed on Friday the second phase of the EDSA rehabilitation, with repair work scheduled until 8 November, involving asphalt overlay and concrete reblocking.
Asphalt overlay work started at 10 p.m. on 6 November and will continue through the day on Sunday. Concrete reblocking on some areas was scheduled for the whole day on Saturday.
The affected sections are the southbound lane of EDSA, from the Main Avenue Bus Station to Annapolis Street, for asphalt overlay, and the northbound lane, from SM Megamall Building B to White Plains Avenue, for concrete reblocking.
All lanes undergoing repairs will reopen to traffic at 5 a.m. on Monday, 9 November.
The latest round of repairs is part of the broader EDSA rehabilitation, which began on 24 December 2025 under a revised plan intended to shorten construction time and minimize traffic disruption.
The government initially planned to spend about P17 billion on the project, but the revised two-phase approach brought the estimated cost down to about P6 billion.
Instead of completely reblocking the highway, the DPWH opted to repair selected concrete sections and use stone mastic asphalt, a more durable road surfacing material.
The first phase, covering Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City to Orense Street in Makati City, was completed in July 2026. The second phase covers the stretch from Orense to Monumento in Caloocan City.
Although the original timetable called for the rehabilitation to take about eight months, the DPWH has since targeted completion of the remaining works in 2027. The schedule has been affected by the need to suspend construction during rainy weather.
The department has also adopted computer-guided, laser-assisted paving equipment for the second phase to produce a more even and durable road surface.
It said the technology would speed up construction, with crews working on different sections simultaneously.
Beyond resurfacing and concrete repairs, the broader project includes drainage improvements, sidewalk widening and upgrades intended to improve mobility and safety for motorists, commuters and pedestrians.
