The Philippine Amateur Baseball Association (PABA) is looking to tap overseas talent, including naturalized and Filipino-foreign players, to strengthen the national team, with particular emphasis on addressing its pitching needs.

PABA secretary general Michael Asuncion said the association has established connections with groups in North America that understand the demands of elite baseball and can identify players who would complement the local talent pool.

The Philippines will host the East Asia Cup from 5 to 14 December at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

“We have serious Filipino-American or Filipino-Canadian groups who understand what we need,” Asuncion told DAILY TRIBUNE.

“They don’t just travel here to play. They know which players can contribute to what our local players need right now.”

Asuncion also addressed the possibility of recruiting New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe, who has Filipino heritage, but admitted that no discussions have taken place with the Major League Baseball (MLB) star.

Volpe visited the Philippines last year, conducting a free baseball clinic and visiting the historic Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

“We didn’t really get to talk to him. Of course, we’re very proud that there’s a Filipino there. But I don’t know if he’s willing to play,” Asuncion said.

“Of course, why not? He’s our MLB player. But again, we want pitchers.”
