Italian Cineforum showcases award-winning Italian films in Manila
Italian cinema takes center stage in Manila as Italian Cineforum 2026 brings acclaimed Italian productions to Filipino audiences, offering a deeper appreciation of the country's filmmaking traditions and storytelling beyond mainstream international releases.
Through its film screenings, the initiative provides viewers with a closer look at Italian cinema, using award-winning productions to highlight the country's creative talent, cultural perspectives and distinctive approach to storytelling.
Among its featured selections is Andrea Molaioli's The Girl by the Lake (2007), an award-winning crime thriller that explores human behavior, hidden secrets and the complexities of a small Italian community.
The film follows Police Inspector Giovanni Sanzio (Toni Servillo), who investigates the murder of Anna (Alessia Piovan), a teenage hockey star in the quiet town of Tarvisio. As the investigation unfolds, Sanzio and his team uncover a web of local secrets, deception and false leads.
Based on Karin Fossum's novel Don't Look Now, the film blends a traditional detective mystery with an emotionally driven narrative centered on its characters and their personal struggles.
Molaioli's restrained direction and Servillo's compelling performance helped establish the film as a standout work in Italian cinema. It received 10 David di Donatello Awards, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor.
The film also reflects the strengths of Italian crime cinema, combining atmospheric storytelling, psychological depth and a carefully paced investigation. Rather than focusing solely on solving the murder, it examines the relationships, personal histories and moral complexities that shape a close-knit community, giving audiences a mystery that goes beyond the usual crime thriller formula.
By bringing productions such as The Girl by the Lake to local audiences, Italian Cineforum offers a platform for films that might otherwise receive limited exposure in mainstream cinemas while fostering greater appreciation for international storytelling.
