The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday ordered an immediate increase in police visibility in communities and public spaces at night following global survey findings showing concerns over personal safety after dark.

The Philippines scored 84 out of 100 in the Gallup Law and Order Index, matching the scores of the United States and the United Kingdom. However, only 64 percent of Filipinos said they felt safe walking alone at night in their communities.

PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. praised frontline personnel, particularly those assigned to visibility and beat patrols, saying these measures help prevent crime and provide peace of mind.

“The report is a reminder that maintaining peace and order is not measured by crime statistics alone. Our success must also be reflected in the confidence of every Filipino inside their home, in walking the streets and in moving around their communities without fear any time of the day,” Nartatez said.

He directed police regional directors and local chiefs of police to reassess nighttime deployments, intensify mobile and foot patrols, and strengthen police presence in identified crime-prone areas.

“This is why I am directing all police regional directors and local chiefs of police to reassess their nighttime deployment, intensify mobile and foot patrols, and strengthen police visibility in identified crime-prone areas,” he said.

“We must bring police presence closer to the communities and ensure that no area is overlooked, particularly during hours when people are most vulnerable,” he added.

Under the directive, police commanders must review patrol schedules and personnel assignments, particularly in areas with recurring nighttime crimes and locations frequented by commuters, workers, students and residents returning home in the evening.

The move follows the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., through the guidance of Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla, to ensure visible, responsive and community-centered policing nationwide.

Nartatez also instructed local police units to coordinate with local government officials to improve street lighting, maximize closed-circuit television (CCTV) coverage, address security gaps and launch community-based crime prevention initiatives.

“To all our kababayan, your safety is our responsibility, and we recognize that public trust must be earned through consistent and visible action. We will continue to strengthen our presence, respond promptly to your concerns, and pursue those who threaten the peace and security of our communities,” Nartatez said.
