NLRC forms specialized labor arbiters unit
The National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC) has formed a specialized unit of labor arbiters tasked exclusively with resolving legal cases involving overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), the Department of Labor and Employment announced Wednesday.
The 10-member team of labor arbiters was formally deployed Tuesday during the NLRC’s 52nd anniversary celebration. The specialized pool aims to fast-track long-pending disputes and strengthen legal protections for land-based and sea-based migrant workers.
NLRC commissioner Jose del Valle Jr. explained during the anniversary event that dedicating specialized arbiters to OFW complaints is part of broader agency reforms to streamline dispute resolution and ease procedural burdens for both workers and recruiters.
“These initiatives reflect our continuing efforts to improve our processes and ensure that those who seek recourse before the Commission receive timely and meaningful resolution of their disputes,” Del Valle said.
Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino attended the launch and pledged full institutional support for the commission’s specialized litigation framework.
“I join in and hope that the NLRC will become even more successful in applying social justice for Filipino workers,” Tolentino said.
He stressed that protecting workers is a fundamental duty under the 1987 Philippine Constitution, which mandates state protection for local and overseas labor.
