DA, Japan reaffirm agricultural development pact
Japanese Ambassador Kitagawa Katsuro paid a courtesy call on Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. to discuss expanding bilateral agricultural cooperation and strengthening food security initiatives.
During the meeting, Kitagawa expressed appreciation for Laurel's support during President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s state visit to Japan in May.
Following the elevation of Japan-Philippines relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, Kitagawa expressed confidence that agricultural collaboration would similarly reach a higher level.
The Japanese envoy emphasized the significance of a Memorandum of Cooperation signed between the DA and Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries as a cornerstone for future joint initiatives.
Kitagawa also expressed enthusiasm for the Philippines' participation in the upcoming Green Expo 2027 in Yokohama, Japan, describing the international event as a key milestone for advancing bilateral farm relations.
He further cited active collaborative projects currently underway, including the Project for the Establishment of a Rice Processing System designed to enhance local post-harvest infrastructure.
Laurel thanked the Japanese government for its sustained assistance to the Philippine agriculture sector and underscored the need to bolster programs that drive sustainable farming practices and bolster long-term food security.
Both officials reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close coordination to deepen agricultural development ties between the two nations.
