Chiefs regain winning form
Arellano University posted a 69-61 victory over San Sebastian College to snap a three-game losing streak in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 102 men’s basketball tournament yesterday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.
T-Mc Ongotan delivered 22 points and five rebounds, helping the Chiefs improved to 6-6 in Group B that kept their bid for a quarterfinal spot and a twice-to-beat advantage in the playoffs alive.
Ongotan credited the coaching staff, led by Chico Manabat, for helping the team get back on track.
“It’s been difficult because we’ve faced many struggles, especially coming off three straight losses. Even though I’m in the process of recovering, it’s been really tough for me personally, knowing there’s nothing I can do to help the team,” Ongotan said.
“We simply followed what coach Chico Manabat told us: to stay committed, defend, and share the ball. We were able to secure this win precisely because we followed those instructions.”
Renzo Abiera gave Arellano breathing room with a three-pointer that stretched its 62-58 lead to 65-58 with 2:32 remaining.
San Sebastian tried to rally as Khit Barroga scored on a floater and Niel Castor split his free throws to cut the deficit to 61-65 with 1:39 left.
But Ongotan and King Vinoya sank four free throws in the final 13 seconds to seal the win for Arellano, which imposed its might in the shaded area by grabbing 54 rebounds and scoring 28 points inside the paint.
