NAGA CITY — Police have launched an investigation into the alleged vandalism of several tombstones at a Catholic cemetery in Nabua, Camarines Sur, after the damage was reported on the eve of All Saints’ Day.

The investigation was initiated on Sunday following a Facebook post by a woman who discovered that her father’s tombstone at the Sto. Domingo Catholic Cemetery, also known as St. Dominic of Guzman Cemetery, had been covered with thick gray paint on Saturday.

The paint obscured the details on the tombstone. Photographs accompanying the post also showed several other graves that had been defaced using the same gray paint, with some bearing obscene graffiti or a large X.

The incident drew attention after families visiting the cemetery to remember their departed loved ones discovered the damage.

The Nabua Municipal Police Station said initial investigation showed that some of the vandalism had been committed last month, while other incidents occurred shortly before All Saints’ Day.

“The Nabua Municipal Police Station will continue its investigation into the incident and coordinate with the administration of the cemetery for the next steps to be taken,” the police said.

The St. Dominic of Guzman Parish, which operates the cemetery, issued a public notice and warning against the vandalism and immediately tightened security and monitoring in the area after receiving the complaint.
