Authorities seized P1.715 million worth of illicit cigarettes and arrested two suspects during an operation in Barangay Poblacion, Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay, on 29 October.

The operation was conducted by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Field Unit and the Ipil Municipal Police Station as part of the campaign against the distribution of illegal tobacco products.

The operation resulted in the confiscation of 35 master cases of cigarettes without the required graphic health warnings. The seized products had an estimated value of P1,715,000.

Two male suspects, identified only as “Ben” and “Adi,” both of legal age, were arrested after they were reportedly caught in possession and control of the questionable tobacco products.

The CIDG said the operation was part of its continuing efforts to prevent the circulation of illicit cigarettes and enforce laws governing tobacco products.

CIDG director said Republic Act 10643, or the Graphic Health Warnings Law, seeks to safeguard public health by informing consumers about the dangers of tobacco use.

The law also aims to protect consumers from trade malpractices and substandard tobacco products through mandatory graphic and textual health warnings on cigarette packaging.
