The Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas (SWP) is optimistic about Rosegie Ramos’ Olympic prospects after she captured a bronze medal in the women’s 53-kilogram category at the IWF World Weightlifting Championships on Thursday in Ningbo, China.

SWP president Monico Puentevella told DAILY TRIBUNE that the 22-year-old lifter is on the right track toward securing a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Ramos lifted 97 kilograms in the snatch to add to the Philippines’ medal haul, following Rose Jean Ramos’ bronze in the snatch of the women’s 49kg category.

“First step to LA. We are closing in. Hard work pays off,” Puentevella said in an online conversation.

“Rosegie just beat the Asian Games bronze medalist Surodchana Khambao of Thailand in snatch. In God’s grace, these kids will be in LA.”

Albert Ian delos Santos was competing in the men’s 70kg category at press time.

Ramos is determined to make it to the Summer Games after missing out on qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The Zamboanga City native failed to crack the top 10 in the women’s 49kg category during the previous Olympic qualifying campaign, a setback that has fueled her determination to make the grade this time.

The road to Los Angeles, however, remains challenging, as Ramos needs to finish among the top eight lifters in her weight category based on her five best lifts during the qualifying period.

The qualifying period runs until May 2028, giving Ramos more time to refine her technique and strengthen her bid for an Olympic berth.
