Horror films to revisit this halloween
Halloween movie nights are the perfect excuse to revisit films that have defined the horror genre, from psychological thrillers that slowly build tension to supernatural stories that continue to haunt audiences years after their release.
IT (2017)
Based on Stephen King’s bestselling novel, IT brought one of literature’s most terrifying villains back to the big screen with Bill Skarsgård’s unforgettable portrayal of Pennywise.
Set in the small town of Derry, Maine, the film follows a group of children who confront their deepest fears after a series of mysterious disappearances. More than a story about a terrifying clown, IT explores friendship, trauma, and the courage to face what frightens us most.
The film became one of the biggest horror releases of all time and earned several accolades, including wins at the MTV Movie & TV Awards and IGN Awards for Best Horror Movie.
Weapons (2025)
A modern mystery wrapped in horror, Weapons follows a community shaken after nearly an entire classroom of children disappears under unexplained circumstances.
Directed by Zach Cregger, known for Barbarian, the film blends suspense and horror while slowly uncovering the secrets behind the disappearance. Amy Madigan’s performance as Aunt Gladys also earned major recognition, including an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
The Exorcist (1973)
Considered one of the most influential horror films ever made, The Exorcist remains a benchmark for supernatural storytelling decades after its release.
The film follows a mother’s desperate search for help after her young daughter begins displaying disturbing changes that appear to be linked to demonic possession. Its powerful performances, unsettling atmosphere, and groundbreaking effects earned it multiple honors, including Academy Awards and Golden Globe wins.
Doctor Sleep (2019)
Serving as a follow-up to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, Doctor Sleep continues the story of Danny Torrance, played by Ewan McGregor, as he confronts the trauma of his childhood while facing new supernatural threats.
Directed by horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan, the film balances psychological drama with eerie suspense. Its performances and storytelling earned critical praise, including recognition from the Saturn Awards, where Kyliegh Curran won Best Performance by a Younger Actor.
