Locals have long called the coconut the “tree of life,” and it’s easy to see why. Almost nothing goes to waste. The water hydrates, the meat nourishes, the husk becomes coir, the shell becomes crafts, and the sap becomes sugar. Today, a new generation of Filipino makers is turning all of these into products you’ll actually want to wear, cook with and give as gifts.

Coconut-based cosmetics are having a moment, and they’re hardly new to us. Natural skin care, hair care, and body products made from coconut offer a simple, locally sourced alternative to products with long ingredient lists.

Shells, husks, and fibers are becoming accessories, kitchenware, and lifestyle décor. A polished shell bowl or a coir-woven piece brings texture and a story to a table or a corner of your home, offering a sustainable choice without trying too hard.

Coconut sugar, festive delicacies, and even wine-mixing creations show how versatile the fruit can be. Coconut sugar and sweets also make thoughtful holiday gifts, as do curated corporate gift packages.

Local pride meets shopping

This month, the DTI-Bagong Pilipinas National Trade Fair, second edition, featuring COCONUTPhilippines, gathered coconut-based products from across the country at SM Megamall’s Megatrade Halls. Organized by the Department of Trade and Industry through BMDPO, in partnership with the Philippine Coconut Authority, the fair connected micro, small, and medium enterprises and beneficiaries of the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan directly with consumers, retailers, and distributors.

Every coconut product you buy supports a “cocopreneur” and the farming families behind their businesses. Buying directly also helps small enterprises improve their packaging, pricing, and distribution as they work toward reaching larger retail and export markets.

As the holiday rush begins, start your shopping list close to home. Choose a coconut sugar set, a natural body care product, or a handcrafted shell piece, and give a gift that’s beautiful, sustainable and proudly Filipino.
