The Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) has warned motorists against reckless driving ahead of the Undas travel rush after recording 118,658 road crashes nationwide from January to 15 October this year.

Of the total, 2,700 incidents were attributed to drunk driving, while speeding emerged as the leading cause of road accidents, according to HPG Director Brig. Gen. Joyce Patrick Sangalang.

During a press briefing at Camp Crame on Thursday, Sangalang said speeding accounted for approximately 37,000 road crashes, followed by improper overtaking with 20,700 and improper turning with 19,100.

Other recorded incidents included 9,700 single-vehicle accidents, 1,600 cases involving cellphone use while driving and 1,400 attributed to mechanical failures.

“We have 118,658 for this year alone from January to Oct. 15 road crash incidents reported,” Sangalang said.

The HPG also recorded approximately 3,800 fatalities and more than 84,000 cases involving property damage during the period.

Motorcycles topped the list of vehicles involved in road crashes, accounting for about 57,700 incidents.

“This 761 will be playing a major role in decongesting the traffic, safeguarding our highways, and to include our travelers and commuters for this Undas,” Sangalang said.

He added that administrative personnel would also be deployed as the unit goes on full alert.

“This time, all admin personnel of the Highway Patrol Group will be also deployed outside. Dahil full alert po, we have 100% attendance,” he said.

The HPG reminded motorists to observe speed limits, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol and refrain from using mobile phones while behind the wheel.

Authorities also urged vehicle owners to take precautions against theft during the long weekend.

Motorists were advised to park in well-lit and secure areas, lock vehicle doors and windows, and avoid leaving keys inside unattended vehicles.

The HPG also recommended using anti-theft devices such as steering-wheel locks, motorcycle handlebar locks, alarms and GPS trackers.
