Authorities seized P180,000 worth of allegedly unregistered and improperly labeled baby diapers during an operation at a warehouse in Barangay Sta. Peregrina, Pulilan, Bulacan, on Tuesday, 27 October.

The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) said its Bulacan Provincial Field Unit, together with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Pulilan Municipal Police Station, conducted the operation for suspected violations of Republic Act 7394, or the Consumer Act of the Philippines.

The operation resulted in the arrest of a woman identified only as “Maria” and the confiscation of 170 bundles of assorted baby diapers.

According to investigators, the suspect was caught selling and distributing products that allegedly failed to meet the minimum labeling requirements prescribed by the DTI.

Under Section 77 of the Consumer Act, consumer products must carry appropriate labeling information, including the manufacturer's or importer's name and address, country of origin, date of manufacture and material composition, as applicable.

The CIDG warned that improperly labeled products could pose risks to consumers because their manufacturers and sources may be difficult to trace.

It also cautioned that the quality and safety of unregistered baby diapers cannot be guaranteed, particularly when the products have not undergone the required regulatory checks.

Authorities said products of uncertain origin may contain unsuitable materials or substances that could cause skin irritation and other health concerns among infants.

CIDG officials commended Regional Field Unit 3 chief Col. Grant Gollod and Bulacan Provincial Field Unit chief Maj. Domingo Resma Jr. for the operation.

The agency urged consumers to check product labels before purchasing baby diapers and report suspicious products or sellers to the CIDG, DTI or Food and Drug Administration.

The suspect faces possible charges under the Consumer Act of the Philippines.
