Expansion squad ClearSkiiin came back from two sets down for a thrilling reverse sweep of VNS-Laticrete, 31-33, 21-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-9, to stay unblemished in the Spikers’ Turf Season 10 Invitational Conference on Saturday at the Playtime FilOil Centre in San Juan.

Showing grit and resilience, the UV Smashers, behind the team’s collective effort led by skipper Louis Gamban and JM Ronquillo, rallied to notch their third straight win in as many games for the solo lead.

“What I really love about our comeback is it’s really a team effort. Not just the players on the court but when I’m looking around with all the players in the huddle, they are absolutely engaged and I think it meant a lot to the players that are on the court,” ClearSkiiin head coach Joe Bangit said.

Ronquillo fired 22 kills for a game-high 24 points while Nas Gwaza had 18 points from 14 attacks, three kill blocks and an ace for the UV Smashers, who survived an error-plagued outing after giving away 36 points off their miscues.

Gamban added 13 points, including crucial hits in the deciding frame, while Renzel Antonio got 12 points and 30 excellent receptions for the UV Smashers. Setter Klint Mateo tallied 21 excellent sets to help his crew convert 71 attack points.

ClearSkiiin pulled away from a slim 8-6 lead in the fifth set with a decisive 6-2 run capped by back-to-back hits by Gamban and Antonio to reach match point, 14-8.
