CCP brings stage and indie films to streaming
Vaults streams archival performances and Filipino independent films for a monthly or annual fee.
The Cultural Center of the Philippines is opening its Vaults this month, transferring decades of performing arts history and independent film onto its streaming platform. The lineup for October bridges the gap between classic stage productions from the late nineties and low-budget indie cinema from recent years.
Among the earliest recordings returning to view is a 1999 concert by the Philippine Madrigal Singers, alongside traditional folk dance performances staged by the Bayanihan Philippine Dance Company. The digital catalog also features a recording of the 1988 ballet adaptation of Snow White, choreographed by Effie Nanas for Ballet Philippines.
Independent cinema takes center stage
Beyond stage archival footage, the center is leaning heavily into independent filmmaking. The stream includes several entries from the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and the Gawad Alternatibo competition.
The film selection spans multiple decades of Philippine indie productions. Viewers can access Jon Steffan Ballesteros’s 2009 feature Colorum, which follows an elderly former convict and a young police officer operating an unlicensed taxi in Manila. More recent additions include Kenneth De la Cruz’s 2023 drama Bulawan Nga Usa and Ronald Espinosa Batallones’s 2022 feature Batsoy.
Short films are also prominent in the scheduled releases, ranging from J. Dennis Teodosio and JP Valencia’s 2006 project Gee-Gee at Waterina to animated and documentary works dealing with contemporary social issues.
Theater scripts adapt to online audiences
Stage drama occupies the remainder of the digital schedule through recorded plays from the Virgin Labfest series. These include Sari Saysay’s Ang Bata sa Bus Stop, directed by Topper Fabregas, which centers on a dialogue between an aspiring priest and a former clergyman.
The center offers access to the streaming portal for 99 pesos a month or 599 pesos for an annual pass, marking a continued push to digitize Philippine stage and film heritage for broader public access.
