Zaijian Jaranilla praised for defending underage co-star

Zaijian Jaranilla earned praise from netizens after calling out veteran showbiz reporter Gorgy Rula over what he deemed an inappropriate question directed at his 12-year-old co-star, Kanye Avendaño.

During the media huddle for Guryon, an indie film, Rula initially asked Avendaño about his background. The young actor shared that he was also part of Mutya ng Section E.

Rula then asked: “Pag lumaki ka ba magbi-Vivamax ka (When you grow up, will you join Vivamax?)”

Avendaño appeared shocked by the question.

Jaranilla was quick to step in and remind the reporter about the actor’s age.

“Underage pa po si Kanye, ingat po sa mga ganu’ng tanong (Kanye is underage, please be careful with those kinds of questions),” Jaranilla said.

Rula immediately apologized, saying: “Pasensiya na. Joke lang ’yun (I’m sorry. It was just a joke).”

However, some netizens criticized the explanation, calling it an excuse after being called out.

“Ginawang excuse yung word na ‘joke’ after ma-call out (He used the word “joke” as an excuse after being called out),” one netizen said.

“Palagi naman ganyan rason kapag nako-call out… joke lang (That’s always the reason when someone gets called out… it was just a joke),” another commented.

Meanwhile, many praised Jaranilla for defending his young co-star.

“This is a full circle moment for Zaijian in the sense that you can already call him a veteran in showbiz, and who knows, maybe he’s been in that same situation before to some degree. I just don’t know if he’s experienced being asked like that before, but hopefully he also had veterans who protected and guided him as he grew up. I’m glad he stepped up to the occasion and called that reporter out,” one fan wrote.

“Kudos to Zaijian for protecting Kanye, but who is that gay showbiz reporter? They really have no etiquette,” another fan said.

Interestingly, Rula is one of the eight founding members of the newly formed entertainment journalists guild LENTE (League of Entertainment Narratives for Truth and Ethics), an organization that aims to elevate the profession by supporting entertainment journalists through ethical standards, continuous learning and mutual aid.
