QC LGU probes police response to farmer protest rally
The local government of Quezon City has ordered a formal investigation into a confrontation between police personnel and protesting farmers outside the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) headquarters.
Reports disclosed that the incident occurred Monday during a demonstration outside the central office of the agrarian department along Elliptical Road.
“Mayor Joy Belmonte has ordered an investigation into the incident. As always, the city believes that anyone proven to have used their authority to hurt, intimidate, or prevent peaceful expression must be held accountable,” the local government said in a statement.
“The mayor emphasized the directive that maximum tolerance must be observed by the Quezon City Police District,” it added.
According to information gathered by municipal officials, the farmers arrived at the department’s offices for a scheduled dialogue with agrarian reform authorities. However, formal notification regarding the situation from DAR officials reached the mayor’s office late Monday afternoon.
City hall officials clarified that the municipality is permitting the farmers to assemble outside the building until Wednesday noon to conduct their peaceful demonstration, emphasizing that local grievances must be addressed through constructive dialogue.
Following the confrontation, the Quezon City government convened a joint coordination meeting with representatives from DAR, the Quezon City Police District, and the farming leaders, during which all parties agreed to maintain order and ensure public safety.
Demonstrators assured municipal authorities that they will maintain cleanliness and peace within the assembly area throughout their stay.
