Regine Velasquez honors late father in emotional ‘Finale’ concert
Regine Velasquez-Alcasid’s 'Finale' became more than a celebration of her 40-year career as the Asia’s Songbird paid tribute to the late father who discovered and nurtured her talent, making the concert an emotional farewell to major solo productions.
Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez-Alcasid turned her much-anticipated concert Finale into a heartfelt tribute to the man who first believed in her extraordinary talent — her late father, Gerardo “Mang Gerry” Velasquez.
Held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, the concert marked a major milestone in Regine’s four-decade career while serving as her emotional farewell to staging major solo productions.
Throughout the night, Regine celebrated her musical journey, performing songs that have defined her legacy while remembering the sacrifices and unwavering support of the father who helped shape her into one of the country’s most respected vocalists.
Mang Gerry, who passed away in 2014, played a significant role in Regine’s rise to fame. More than being her first vocal coach, he was her constant companion and biggest supporter, making sure to be present during many of her earliest performances and career milestones.
Before the concert, Regine had shared how she imagined her father would react to her decision to stage Finale. With her trademark humor, she said Mang Gerry might have initially been surprised but would eventually encourage her to take a well-deserved break after decades of performing.
The emotional connection became even more meaningful when Regine recently commemorated what would have been her father’s 89th birthday on 16 October.
Through an Instagram post, the singer shared an old photograph of herself beside Mang Gerry and revealed an unexpected discovery that brought back memories of their time together.
Regine recalled initially thinking that the young boy beside her in the photo was her son, Nate, because of his striking resemblance to his grandfather. It was only after looking at the image more closely that she realized she was actually looking at a childhood photo of herself with her father.
The moment deeply touched Regine, especially because Nate was still a baby when Mang Gerry passed away.
For the singer, the resemblance offered a bittersweet glimpse of the bond her father and son could have shared if they had more time together.
She described the discovery as a precious gift that allowed her to imagine a relationship that could never happen in real life. She also assured her father that a special seat would always be waiting for him at the SM Mall of Asia Arena during Finale.
Beyond the emotional tribute, Regine also showcased the music that has defined her career. Her repertoire included memorable songs associated with her journey as a performer, alongside selections that reflected her lasting influence in Philippine music.
The concert also reflected Regine’s personal approach to the next chapter of her career. She shared that her preparations were focused not on returning to her younger figure but on feeling comfortable and confident while performing in elegant gowns onstage.
Although Finale marked what Regine described as her last major concert production, the event represented more than the end of a chapter.
It celebrated four decades of music, the fans who have supported her through the years, and the love of the father who helped her discover the voice that would eventually inspire generations.
For Regine, Finale was not simply a farewell to major solo concerts — it was a tribute to Mang Gerry, whose belief in her talent remained one of the greatest gifts of her life.
