Defending champion San Beda University survived a late rally by Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) to escape with an 89-86 victory in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 102 men’s basketball tournament on Monday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre.
Aldous Torculas led the Red Lions with 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists as they improved to a 6-3 win-loss record in Group A.
Torculas, a two-time University Athletic Association of the Philippines champion with the University of the Philippines, cited head coach Yuri Escueta’s pep talk as motivation for him and the others to level up their game in the second half.
“Coach Yuri said we were too soft. We needed a bit more toughness and a bit more intensity in the second half,” Torculas said.
San Beda appeared headed for a comfortable victory after Torculas’ three-pointer with 7:02remaining in the fourth quarter gave the Red Lions an 85-74 lead.
But Kyle Ochavo sparked EAC’s comeback with a triple at the 6:40 mark, igniting a 12-0 run that put the Generals ahead, 86-85, with 1:16 left.
