MINING DISPUTE REACHES OMBUDSMAN
Residents of Kasibu, Nueva Vizcaya, joined environmental and Indigenous rights groups in filing complaints against police personnel, Barangay Pao officials and NLMRC before the Office of the Ombudsman in Quezon City on Monday, 19 October.
The complaints stem from the arrests of the Kasibu 3 and Kasibu 11, along with allegations of bribery, corruption and perjury. Environmental defenders from Dupax del Norte also filed countercharges against police officers.
Marking National Indigenous Peoples Month, the groups demanded the revocation of NLMRC's exploration permit, citing alleged land grabbing, threats to livelihoods and concerns over mining expansion linked to foreign mineral demand under the U.S.-led Pax Silica initiative.
