‘Fourth Wing’ casts Esther McGregor and Emilio Sakraya as Violet and Xaden
The dragon-riding romance of Rebecca Yarros’ Fourth Wing is moving closer to the screen, with Esther McGregor and Emilio Sakraya tapped to play Violet Sorrengail and Xaden Riorson in the upcoming Prime Video adaptation.
Fans of Fourth Wing finally have two names to attach to its central romance.
Esther McGregor and Emilio Sakraya have been cast as Violet Sorrengail and Xaden Riorson, respectively, in the television adaptation of Rebecca Yarros’ bestselling fantasy novel, according to Deadline. The announcement offers the first major glimpse of the actors who will lead the screen version of one of the biggest romantasy hits in recent years.
Published in 2023, Fourth Wing launched Yarros’ The Empyrean series, drawing readers into a world of dragon riders, military training and dangerous alliances. Its mix of fantasy, high-stakes action and slow-burning romance helped build a devoted readership, making the casting of its two main characters a closely watched development.
At the center of the story is Violet, a young woman who has spent much of her life preparing to become a scribe. Her plans change when she is ordered to enter Basgiath War College and train as a dragon rider, a path that puts her in a world where physical strength, strategy and survival can mean the difference between life and death.
Violet is not the obvious candidate for such a brutal institution. Smaller and more physically vulnerable than many of her fellow cadets, she must rely on her intelligence, determination and ability to adapt. The challenge becomes even greater as she navigates rivalries, deadly trials and the demands of bonding with a dragon.
Then there is Xaden Riorson, a powerful and enigmatic rider whose family history places him at odds with the establishment. His complicated relationship with Violet becomes one of the story’s defining threads, unfolding against a backdrop of political tension, secrets and the ever-present threat of death.
Their dynamic is a major reason reader have embraced the book, putting the actors’ chemistry among the details fans will likely be watching when the series takes shape.
McGregor, the daughter of actor Ewan McGregor, has appeared in projects including Babygirl and The Room Next Door. Her casting brings her into a fantasy franchise with an established fan base and a lead character whose journey demands both vulnerability and resolve.
Sakraya, a German actor and musician, has credits including Warrior Nun, 60 Minutes and Those About to Die. As Xaden, he will take on a character known for his commanding presence, guarded nature and complicated connection to Violet.
The series is being developed for Prime Video, with Yarros serving as an executive producer. Moira Walley-Beckett, known for her work on Breaking Bad and Anne with an E, is attached as showrunner.
The adaptation will need to bring more than the book’s romantic tension to the screen. Basgiath’s dangerous training grounds, the bond between riders and dragons, and the political conflicts surrounding the characters are central to the story. Translating those elements into a television series will be key to capturing the scale of Yarros’ fictional world.
No premiere date has been announced, and further details about the production remain under wraps.
