State-funded scholars, catalysts of development
As the Philippines explores nuclear power and modernizes its infrastructure, the country faces a critical need for highly specialized technical expertise.
To complement President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s focus on education, digital transformation, and nuclear power utilization, government youth scholars must align their academic pursuits, digital skills-building, and civic responsibility with the “Bagong Pilipinas” (New Philippines) framework.
As beneficiaries of state-funded education, scholars are expected to transition from passive learners to active catalysts for national development.
Scholars can align with and champion these three presidential priorities through several actionable pathways.
1. Champion Digital Transformation and Innovation
To push for a digitally empowered bureaucracy and economy requires tech-savvy leaders. Scholars can:
a) Advance digital literacy: Future-proof their skills by mastering artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, cybersecurity, and coding, regardless of their primary field of study.
b) Develop local tech solutions: Create capstone projects, research papers, and open source software that address real world community issues, such as showing local government services or improving agricultural supply chains.
c) Combat misinformation: Utilize their digital footprint to promote media literacy, ensuring that online spaces remain constructive and fact-based.
2. Support Sustainable Energy and STEM Research
As the Philippines explores nuclear power and modernizes its infrastructure, the country faces a critical need for highly specialized technical expertise. Scholars can:
a) Pivot toward STEM fields: Focus academic research on specialized training in engineering, environmental science, data physics, and energy technologies.
b) Promote science communication: Help bridge the gap between complex policies (like nuclear energy utilization) and public understanding by educating tier communities on safety, sustainability, and economic benefits of a diversified energy mix.
c) Engage in sustainability initiatives: Lead or participate in local environmental conservation and energy-saving programs within their universities and barangays.
3. Maximize Educational Opportunities and Return the Investment
Education is the cornerstone of the administration’s human capital development. Scholars can complement this by:
a) Committing to academic excellence: Treat state-funded education as a serious responsibility by maintaining high academic standards and graduating on time.
b) Honoring return-service agreements: Fulfill any post-graduation service requirements with dedication opting to work in public sectors, rural areas, or local industries where their expertise is most urgently needed.
c) Monitoring others: Act as tutors or leaders in the local youth sector, helping younger students improve their reading, math, and scientific literacy.
4. Embody Civic Leadership and Accountability
A “Bagong Pilipinas” relies on transparent, proactive citizenship. Scholars can lead by example by:
a) Participating in governance: Engaging constructively with the Sangguniang Kabataan or local youth councils to ensure community projects are data-driven.
c) Fostering a culture of excellence: Upholding ethical standards, rejecting corruption, and promoting discipline in both academic and daily life.
Parents play a vital role in ensuring the state-funded scholars fulfill their legal and patriotic responsibilities, seamlessly complementing the administration’s vision for national development.
In the Philippines, government initiatives like the Office of the President’s “Bawat Barangay Makikinabang” Presidential Scholars Program and specialized grants like the Doktor Para sa Bayan Act (RA 112509) or DoST Science and Technology scholarships (RA 7687) underscore a clear vision: education is a tool for nation-building.
As President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. emphasizes, public education funding is an investment to prepare the youth to actively lead and manage the country’s future.
