PBBM affirms respect for Bangsamoro Autonomy as 46-member coalition forms
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reaffirmed the national government's commitment to Bangsamoro autonomy and democratic institutions following the formation of a 46-member majority coalition in the newly elected regional legislature.
In a statement issued through the Office of the President, Marcos recognized the coalition's intent to establish the Government of the Day through established parliamentary procedures in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
"Following the announcement of a 46-member majority coalition, I reiterate the national government’s respect for Bangsamoro autonomy and its democratic institutions," Marcos said.
"We respect Parliament’s authority to determine its leadership in accordance with the Bangsamoro Organic Law," he added.
Marcos congratulated the elected members of the Bangsamoro Parliament, calling the region's first regular parliamentary elections a historic milestone in the pursuit of self-governance and durable peace in southern Mindanao.
"The successful conduct of the elections shows that the political process is proceeding at such a good pace," Marcos said, adding that self-governance remains central to the Bangsamoro peace process.
The President expressed readiness to partner with the regional leadership formally organized by the parliament to advance regional stability, economic growth, and peace-building initiatives.
"The national government will continue to support a strong, autonomous, and peaceful Bangsamoro," Marcos said.
The 46-member majority coalition gives its leaders the parliamentary vote threshold needed to organize the regional government and select the chief minister, marking a crucial step in transitioning the regional administration from interim governance to a fully elected parliamentary system.
