CALAMBA CITY, Laguna — A 73-year-old traffic enforcer died after being struck by a van while helping a pedestrian cross the national highway in Barangay Pansol on Sunday night, 11 October.

According to the Calamba City Police Station, the incident occurred around 9:35 p.m. near Andok's Chicken Roast Store.

Initial investigation showed that the traffic enforcer was assisting a pedestrian at a crossing when another vehicle stopped to give way.

An Isuzu Elf closed van traveling from Barangay Bagong Kalsada toward Crossing, Calamba, allegedly overtook the stationary vehicle on its right side and struck the traffic enforcer.

The impact threw the victim toward the roadside, leaving him with serious injuries.

He was rushed to JP Rizal Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 10:50 p.m. despite efforts to revive him.

Police identified the victim as a 73-year-old traffic enforcer assigned to the local traffic management office and a resident of Barangay Pansol.

The 29-year-old van driver, also a Calamba resident, was arrested and detained following the incident.

Authorities said a complaint for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide is being prepared against the driver.

An autopsy examination is also expected to determine the victim's cause of death.
