The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is seeking a clearer assessment of national sports programs to determine how it can help disciplines that failed to win medals improve their chances of success.

PSC chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio said national sports associations (NSAs) must submit development plans to the agency’s commissioners so they can identify areas that need to be addressed.

He stressed that cooperation between the PSC and national sports associations is crucial, saying the agency cannot provide meaningful assistance without understanding each sport’s plans and needs.

The Philippines is coming off a successful campaign in the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan with four golds, nine silvers and 16 bronze medals.

“We’re not asking for a report just because they failed to win. We want them to submit reports to the commissioners so we can determine how to improve and develop their sports,” Gregorio said.

“If the PSC doesn’t know their programs, we won’t be able to help them.”

Gregorio also pointed to successful sports programs in the United States, Japan, South Korea and Poland as models the Philippines could study and adapt.

He identified four key components: a strong grassroots program, world-class Olympic and world championship coaches, the recruitment of naturalized athletes where needed, and greater involvement from Filipinos living abroad.

Gregorio’s push for closer coordination underscores the PSC’s emphasis on identifying specific needs and building sustainable development programs rather than focusing solely on medal results.
