Generation that doesn’t quite fit

Were you born in the mid-1990s and feel like you do not completely belong to either Millennials or Gen Z? There is a reason for that.

You might be part of a small group known as Zillennials, a “micro-generation” that sits between two of the most talked-about generations today.

The term Zillennial is commonly used to describe people born around 1993 to 1998, although the exact years are not officially defined.

Unlike traditional generational labels, Zillennial is more of a cultural term that describes people who experienced the childhood of Millennials and the digital upbringing associated with Gen Z.

What makes Zillennials different is that they grew up during a major technological transition. They remember a time when the Internet was not always available, when families shared a single computer at home, and when entertainment often came through DVDs, television schedules and physical music players.

But as they entered their teenage years, technology rapidly changed. Social media platforms became part of everyday life, smartphones became common, and online communication transformed how people connected with one another.

This puts Zillennials in a unique position. They experienced an offline childhood but adapted to a digital adulthood. They may remember dial-up internet, early messaging platforms and downloading songs, while also being among the first groups to embrace Instagram, smartphones and the rise of influencer culture.

The confusion surrounding generational labels comes from the fact that these categories are not exact scientific boundaries. Researchers use generations as tools to understand groups of people who share similar historical, social and technological experiences, but the lines between generations are not fixed.

For example, the Pew Research Center generally defines Millennials as those born from 1981 to 1996 and Generation Z as those born from 1997 onward, placing some people born in the mid-to-late 1990s close to the dividing line.

Beyond birth years, being a Zillennial is often about shared memories. It is remembering life before smartphones became essential while still understanding a world where everything is connected online.

They are the generation that remembers waiting for a website to load but also knows what it feels like to grow up with social media. They experienced the final moments of an offline childhood and witnessed the beginning of a fully digital era.

For many Zillennials, the label explains why they feel connected to both Millennials and Gen Z — yet not completely defined by either one.
