NCRPO cautions public vs fake crime reports
The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) warned the public Wednesday against spreading fake, misleading and unverified crime reports on social media, cautioning that circulating false information carries legal penalties.
NCRPO officer-in-charge Brig. Gen. Christopher Abrahano urged social media users to verify reports before posting or forwarding content online, noting that unconfirmed posts trigger widespread public anxiety and disrupt ongoing law enforcement operations.
“Social media is a powerful tool for informing the public, but it must be used responsibly,” Abrahano said.
“Do not immediately post or share information about alleged crimes unless it has been properly verified. An unverified post can cause unnecessary alarm, create fear and confusion, and even interfere with legitimate police operations,” he added.
