Making coffee is one thing. Making it under pressure, while telling the story behind every ingredient and maintaining flawless technique, is another.

That was the challenge faced by 25 baristas from 13 Asia-Pacific and Japan markets during the 10th Asia Pacific Regional Barista Championships, held in Manila, where coffee preparation became both a test of skill and a showcase of craftsmanship.

The three-day competition featured pour-over brewing, latte art and signature beverage presentations, with participants judged not only on taste and technique but also on their understanding of coffee and ability to communicate the story behind each drink.

The championship also introduced the Ultimate Barista Team Challenge, shifting the focus from individual talent to the fast-paced reality of working behind the coffee bar. Teams navigated drink sequencing, customer service scenarios and beverage preparation while maintaining quality throughout the competition.

Philippines ended with strong finishes in both categories.

Jetro of Starbucks Philippines placed second in the individual competition with his signature beverage, Sirendipity, made with the Veranda Blend.

Meanwhile, Team Craft It Up — Charles, Zine and Brix — won the first Ultimate Barista Team Challenge, demonstrating the coordination and communication needed to keep a busy café running smoothly.

Coffee education also remained part of the program, with tasting sessions and workshops led by industry experts, including Nobuki Shimode of Japan, the first Global Barista Champion.

The individual championship title went to Seven of Hong Kong and Macau, whose signature beverage, “Citrus Horizons,” featured the Colombia Finca Potosi Black Honey blend.

First held in Hong Kong in 2016, the Regional Barista Championships has grown into an annual platform for baristas across Asia Pacific to sharpen their skills and exchange ideas. Since its launch, more than 83,000 Starbucks partners have participated in coffee competitions, with many advancing to national and international events.
